Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon – Second Largest Canyon On Earth

Fish River Canyon in Namibia, Luderitz, geez, 30km before the town, I was asking my GPS: People live here? Sand where ever I looked, sand, dunes, and more sand.

Arriving in Luderitz/Nambia was like driving into a little German town. Indeed, it is not a big city, more a small town in a sort of a German-style. Supermarkets, gas stations are all there. As well as a delicious restaurant at the harbor! As I was stepping out of the car a heavy cold wind was greeting me. Undoubtedly, it was quite chilly. I was glad when I saw that the shark island campsite also had chalets to rent. Certainly, that was too cold to sleep in a tent! Not with just the blanket I got from the Jeep rental!

The chalet I rented was not too expensive, so why not. It had everything, kitchen, bathroom, and 12 beds for my choice! View at sea on one side, which was undoubtedly beautiful. As well as on the other side, a beautiful view of the harbor. Very nice and clean. I must say, throughout Namibia, the campsites get from me a 4 – 5-star rating (rating was done 2013! In 2020 I add, many campsite facilities should be renovated). It was always clean, and nothing was missing at all. In Luderitz, I stayed one night.

Edit September 2019 and January 2020, of campsites in Etosha National Park and some throughout the country, need a renovation, in my opinion!

Early morning at sunrise, I was at the main view/rim to take landscape photos of the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. Discover our African landscape photo prints for sale collection.

Never ending drive to the Fish River Canyon

The next morning before the drive to the Fish River Canyon, I took off to the Diaz Point. It was a beautiful drive around this area at sea. I saw a few flamingos at a distance looking for food, Lighthouse at Point Diaz..etc.

At about 10 am, the journey to the canyon started. First 300km tar road ( B4 ) to the junction to the canyon. Turn right into M28 direction: Fish River Canyon main viewpoint, about 120km. The gravel road crosses a few times rail tracks. Haven’t seen any train at all on my way in or out, but crossed the tracks quite often! After a long drive, I was arriving at the gate of the National Park and the Hobas campsite. The campsite is inside the National Park. There are no time limits when to go or leave the main view/rim of the Fish River Canyon. The only restriction is that you are not allowed to camp at the edge of the canyon. The campsite was clean and not too overloaded with tourists.

The main rim to view the fish river canyon

From the campsite, it was another 8-10km to the main view/rim. I have seen the Grand Canyon, but I must say I like the Fish River Canyon in Namibia much more from the view. Breathtaking, just fantastic. A place to visit for landscape photography and a breathtaking view.

There I was, taking a few landscape photos and waiting for the sun to set over the canyon. I was having dinner on the rim observing this beautiful African sunset before I was heading back to the campsite. The next morning I got up very early for another stop at the main view spot for another amazing sunrise. Arriving there, indeed, I was all alone. No person was to be seen. A few Oryx in the distance, a few lizards, that was it. What bliss, listening to the “music” of the natural world. Sure I enjoyed the peace very much with one of the most impressive views on earth. The sun was getting ready to bring light into the spectacle of the mountain formations. The scenery changed with every move of the sun. The list plays with the shadows and much more. When the light began to get too harsh, I pulled out my gas cooker and made myself a cup of coffee. Enjoying the view, as well as being happy that I was able to capture the landscape photographs I was looking for.

Listening To The Natural World Its Music

Yeah, still all alone! 3 hours had passed already. I was wondering where all the tourists are! Getting comfy in my chair, listening to the “music” of the natural world, enjoying the view, not to forget my coffee. Homemade.
