In this desert landscape photograph stands an Acacia tree in front of a red dune in a sandstorm. In the distance behind, grow a few trees and shrubs in front of the impressive red dune. Wind from the sea blowing inland has built up speed, which blows the loose desert sand over the scenery.

It looks as the passing cloud of dust swallows the trees, bushes, and dune. Of course, there was sunshine all day in the desert. The heat waves emitted by the earth and vegetation are visible through the shimmer in the air. Nevertheless, it also can rain in the Namibian desert. If that happens, the sand’s iron oxide layer will create the most amazing effect of wave patterns on dunes.

Acacia Tree & Red Dune

The dry Tsauchab riverbed is going along the Sossusvlei dunes beside the road. The river leads to Deadvlei. Due to the climate change, the river is blocked to reach Deadvlei. Many years ago, the Tschaub river had water. These days it is a dry riverbed with trees and bushes growing in front of the red dunes.

Within a few years, I visit this place, more and more trees die due to water shortage. The first time I have visited Sossusvlei, the trees along the riverbed were green and growing beautifully. This year 2020, I was astonished by how many trees have died within 1-2 years.

While you drive along the road, you also see a beautiful tree standing in front of a red dune, the famous dune #45.
