This sweet African penguin stands on a large boulder to dry off its feathers in the sun — a perfect African penguin portrait of this funny, sweet bird. As seen in the behavior of much marine birdlife, they will stand facing the sun, spread their wings, and soak up the warm sun rays after being in the water. Indeed, this African penguin is curious to see what Anette is doing.
African Penguin Portrait
African penguins are fishing in the sea for their meals. They eat a variety of foods, including fish, squid, crabs, krill, and many other types of seafood. During summer times, they will eat about 1 kg of food a day.
However, during the winter times, they will only generally eat about a third of their usual amount. The reason for this is, it is a lot colder in the water. Undoubtedly, they will spend more time on land in the sun, like in this African penguin that stands on a large boulder.
Interestingly, penguins do not have teeth. They contain backward-facing fleshy spines inside their mouths that move the fish in the opposite direction down their throats.
The African penguin, Spheniscus demersus, is endangered on the IUCN red list.
