Good morning, beautiful Kalahari. Let’s see what the day brings to me today. A sweet baby Meerkat is standing up on a red sand dune looking at the rising African sun. The morning dew is still on the blades of grass and on the fur of this young animal. Standing upright, looking to the sunrise, and of course, scanning the desert for potential predators.
Baby Meerkat Standing
Why is the Meerkat pup standing? These funny animals go to high points to better overview their foraging area. That means also standing upright makes them a little bit taller. When you sit on the ground, and they are comfy with your presence, you may be lucky, and one might climb on your shoulder or head. In fact, climbing tall bushes for the cute animals is not seldom. They are excellent at balancing on top of a bush on the little branches. When they spot a potential predator, the alarm call will sound. Together with the pups and Meerkat family, they will run to safety immediately their burrow.
Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are listed as least concern on the IUCN red list. Their populations you find mostly in Southern Western Africa.
