This is my beautiful Epupa Waterfalls photograph as a limited edition fine art photographic print. The waterfalls are brilliantly white and contrast against the dark rock with Baobab trees and Makalani palm trees. From this distance, the water looks exceptionally peaceful and soft.
However, in reality, the Epupa falls water current is overwhelmingly powerful. The massive amount of falling water only happens in the rainy season due to the annual rainfalls when the water level is high.
Further upstream, of the Kunene River, are as well the Ruacana Falls located. Of course, these were also on my list to photograph in 2014. They are located right behind the Angolan dam at the border to Namibia. When this dam closes its gates, not much water will run down the cliffs.
I was able to capture the Epupa waterfalls in 2014 in Namibia when the water level was high. During the day, the water level changed drastically. The Angolan dam closed the gates. That meant the Ruacana falls would be without water.
In 2020 I was traveling in Namibia. Friends told me that the falls are in full flow. So I took my chance to drive north to photograph the Ruacana Falls. I was lucky with the full water flow. Both waterfalls were on my bucket list for many years.
The series of waterfalls occur between a width of 500m / 1600ft and a length of 1.5km / 0.93mi. The Kunene River flows along the border of Namibia and Angola in the Kunene Region. This river on the border is one of the 5 perennial rivers in Namibia.
It starts in the highlands of Angola and has a total length of about 945 kilometers / 587 miles. It flows along the border between Namibia and Angola until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean.
Not too far from the Epupa Falls at the border of Namibia, you will find Himba villages. The Himba people are indigenous people. Their population is estimated to be about 50.000.
