The Scarlett red hibiscus floats in the water surrounded by blue, green, yellow, and purple petals. The hibiscus has a red stem in the middle that grows straight upward. Beautiful flower arrangement you will often find in Asia.
There are over 200 different species of hibiscus. You find these flowers in warm tropical regions all over the world. Interestingly, in China, we know this flower as the “shoe flower” because people use it to polish their shoes.
Furthermore, the people of Polynesia use the fibers from the bark of the hibiscus tree to produce grass skirts. Another fascinating cultural ritual is that women in Tahiti and Hawaii wear hibiscus flowers behind the right ear. With the flower, they want to announce that they are single and ready for marriage. Married women wear a hibiscus behind their left ear.
The food industry uses these bright flowers as natural dyes. Correspondingly, women in China also use the color of the flower to dye their eyebrows. According to some medical studies, tea made of hibiscus lowers blood pressure and decreases cholesterol levels. Indeed, China and Thailand produce the highest amounts of hibiscus in the world.
