The enormous Fish River Canyon is the second largest in the world, right after the Grand Canyon in America. The Fish River Hiking Trail is only accessible from the months of April to September. It takes travelers around 4 – 5 days to complete. The Fish River is 800 kilometers in length and thus the longest river in Namibia. After about 200 km the river reaches the Hardap Dam. Subsequently, it is the largest water reservoir in the country with a circumference of 30 kilometers and a surface area of 28 square kilometers.
However, this river is not in abundance all year round. It is only a fully functional and flowing river during the rainy season. After that, in the dry season, it becomes sporadic pools of water that provide welcome relief to the wildlife in the area. We discovered that 350 million years ago, the biological formation of the Fish River Canyon started. That is even before the dinosaurs became extinct! Who knows, they might have been drinking from this very river back then.
