A cute Meerkat baby sits upright on a GuraGear Camera bag in the hope of reaching the sky! No, this funny animal tries to sit higher above the ground to scan the area better. But what can be up there? Well, birds of prey are one major enemy for the meerkats.
Meerkats, as well as the babies, are always on the lookout for danger. My camera bag just came in handy very much to be higher up. The Meerkat baby seems to love it up there. If the camera bag stood upright, I am sure this cute little fellow would also have climbed up to scan for stranger danger. Next time when I visit them in the wilderness of the Kalahari.
Every Meerkat family member has a job. Some need to be the guard, looking for potential predators, while the rest of the family is foraging for food and the babies play. Some of the Meerkats need to babysit the pups of the gang. Of course, the cute Meerkat babies look for food.
As our children do, Meerkats playing can also become a big fight. That is when the babysitters get the young pups apart. It is fun to watch Meerkat families and how they interact. There is always something going on in the meerkat family. One runs from the right to the left while the other animal tries to still the bug from his smaller sister! Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are listed as least concern on the IUCN red list. You find the families mostly in Southern Western Africa.
