A funny Meerkat has a blade of grass perched on his face, right above his eyes. The cute meerkat looks surprised as it stares into the camera! On the search for food, this blade of grass must have somehow gotten onto this adorable meerkat’s face.
As you can see in the photograph, meerkats are adorable, with large eyes and fluffy fur. Their coats also contain little stripes creating a pattern on their fur. They have many ways to stay protected from predators. They live in groups called ‘mobs’ underground in burrows that they have dug. That keeps them safe when they are sleeping. Meerkats also have designated jobs for different members of the mob. A sentry Meerkat is one that will stand on the lookout for danger while the others forage for food and look after the young.
The sentry will find a high point to search for predators. They will stand on rocks, termite mounds, and any other object that will elevate them so they can scan the horizon. If a predator does come into contact with them, they will stand on their hind legs together in a tight group and hiss. That gives the illusion that they are bigger than they are. If it fools the predator, it will slink away while the Meerkats stay unharmed. Not only are they cute, but they are smart too!
Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are in the category least concern on the IUCN red list.
