A Meerkat is standing up between lush green grass. The morning dew is still on the blades of grass. Look at the tiny paws. How covered they with red ground from the Kalahari dunes. The security guard, the lookout, carefully scans the area for predators. It is a life and death security measure for the family members who depend on it.
Why A Meerkat Lookout Stands Up
When a Meerkat is standing up on its hind legs, it also uses its tail for support. In fact, with the tail they manage to lean forward and backward. Now that backward leaning looks funny. It seems that they would sit in an armchair at home. What’s more?
Meerkats stand up to look for potential predators which can come and snatch an animal. They look at the sky for birds of prey as well as observe the horizon for jackals, snakes, and more. Some meerkats seem to be like sky worshippers. Others love the scenery immensely. Their heads go from the right to the left side, checking out what’s behind the next bush or crawling along the dune.
Meerkats, Suricata suricatta are listed as the least concern on the IUCN red list.
