A polar bear is in front of the Nordenskiold Glacier in search of food. Behind this beautiful polar bear, you see a massive ice wall. It is incredibly overwhelming, especially when you consider how big polar bears are. The predator is standing on the right on large rocks. Indeed this polar bear looks tiny in front of the Nordenskiold Glacier.
Apex Predator – Polar Bears
Polar bears are one of the most iconic and well-loved species in the world. Despite this, these majestic and inspirational bears are under serious threat from climate change, which has left their sea ice habitat diminishing. Interestingly, polar bears are the only bear we consider as a marine mammal. That is because they spend most of their time on sea ice hunting for food. They can reach a speed of up to 6 mph in the water and swim for long hours at a time, covering great distances.
Polar bears, Ursus maritimus, are listed as a threatened species on the IUCN list.
