.Two African Lions with black manes in a B&W Portrait. The massive black maned Lion in front is in focus, and the beautiful Lion behind is more out of focus. The brother in the background is watching closely. The light grass in the background makes these impressive Lions with black manes stand out in this fine art black and white lion photograph.

Black Maned African Lions B&W Portrait

Lions are one of the largest predators. Secondary only to the tiger in size. Another interesting fact about Lions is that male Lions have a thick mane of fur around their neck. That protects the male Lion during fights, as well as to impress the Lionesses. The bigger and thicker the mane is, the more eye-catching they are to prospective mates. Black-maned lions are elusive, and look most impressive

Male African Lions can still produce sperm at the old age of 16. However, they will only continue to breed for as long as they can dominate a pride from other male Lions. Once they can no longer win fights, they lose their mating rights. African Lions can grow between 9 to 10 feet long (3 meters) from tail to head. Also, they weigh in at around 150 – 250 kilograms.

The African Lion is under the category vulnerable in the IUCN Red List.

Thanks so much, Thomas. The black mane of the lions gives a real great touch to these wild animals.

Love the “brotherly peace” between these two

Me too Hanneke. They spent all day sleeping under a tree. Late afternoon they finally went on the move to the nearby waterhole.
      Thank you very much.
      Ciao Anette
