Background

The Wild Dogs walking along a river stand out due to their attractive patterned coat. Shortly before the sunset in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, these dogs are walking along the river. It is extended exposure time. Which means we use a slow shutter speed while panning that creates this motion blur. There is an underlying subtle pink hue coming through the photograph.

The African Wild Dog we know as the painted hunting dog. These persistent carnivores relentlessly chase down their prey. Until their victim succumbs to exhaustion, and the Wild Dog begins to eat their prey alive. Unlike larger carnivores, the wild dog does not suffocate their prey with a ferocious bite to the neck. They do have the highest hunting success rate out of any carnivore, with a whopping 80% of their hunts being successful. That is due to the coordinated nature of the pack. Their astounding intelligence and their ability to communicate efficiently pay off. A female will rule until she dies.

African Wild Dogs, Lycaon pictus, is on the IUCN list as endangered. Sightings of these beautiful animals are incredibly rare.
