These African penguins walk on the beach. It is late afternoon and these cute flightless birds have just arrived from the ocean. Being out all-day fishing and now on their way to feed the chicks. Indeed they share the shift of looking after the chick with their partners. The flock of African penguins has about 35 individuals, all waddling onto the sandy shoreline. Beautiful large boulders are behind the cute African penguins.

African Penguins – Jackass Penguins

African Penguins we also know as ‘Jackass’ Penguins due to their distinctive donkey-like bray. However, other species also have similar vocal noises. Therefore, ‘African penguins’ is now their official name.

As part of the annual molting process, African penguins experience drastic weight changes. In preparation for the molting season, when they are unable to enter the water, penguins can double their weight. They are gorging on fish and storing up fat for an extended period when they do not eat. Ultimately, they can double or half their weight in a short time. Penguins come together, forming large colonies.

Sadly, the African Penguin has been a species declining since the industrial age began. Due to overfishing, habitat destruction, coastal development, and several other human influences. Consequently, the population that used to boast over 1 million pairs is now at around 26 000 pairs.

The African penguin, Spheniscus demersus, is endangered on the IUCN red list.
