About This Black & White Elephant Tusks

When I returned from my morning drive, this elephant was near my campsite in the Nxai Pan. The Nxai Pan is a National Park in Botswana, which is a salt flat that belongs to the Makgadikgadi Pan. The elephant bull drank water from a little waterhole and sprayed his body with water.

From time to time in between spraying his body with water, it seemed that he took little naps. He did not move at all, only resting. I am always fascinated by observing and photographing these amazing animals.

As a matter of fact, African elephants live in large groups and are social animals. They stay in a family duration of their lives. But the male elephants, when they reach a certain age, have to leave the herd. As a matter of fact, only female elephants stay in breeding herds together with the calves and young animals.

The IUCN lists African Elephants, Loxodonta africana, in the Vulnerable category.
