The warm colors of the lush greens and red earth of the Kalahari contrast beautifully with the Meerkat. A cute Meerkat baby is standing upright at the edge of a dune observing the sky for potential birds of prey. This behavior of the Suricata animal we call sentry or guard. It is always good to be watchful to keep the Meerkat family safe.
When a meerkat sentry stands up, the animal will move its head often from right to left, scanning the area. Looking at the sky, if any predators with wings are flying over them, immediately go back to examine the left to right. Between standing upright, they run from a higher point to the next, which hopefully is higher.
The family has to stay safe, especially the cute meerkat babies. After a while of hard observing work, the sentry switches the job with another animal. Of course, the first guard needs to be eating as well a few bugs.

Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are listed as the category of least concern on the IUCN red list.
