A sweet Meerkat Sentry is on the lookout to see any possible threats coming toward the community. Indeed it is its job to be a guard for the group. The meerkat sentry is in the foreground of the photograph and the background, as you can see, is endless grass and clear blue skies. Although it is taking up predominantly the left side of the photograph, its’ gaze is fixed to the right, ultimately balancing out the composition.

Meerkat Lookout

Sentinel meerkats are non-breeders, and it is their job to be on the lookout for danger. In ‘Meerkat Sentry On The Lookout,’ you can see the upraised guarding position that meerkats typically do when they are on the lookout. They go on duty, usually when the group is away from their burrows or foraging for food. A meerkats’ lifespan is around 12 – 14 years, also their weight is less than a kilogram! Throughout their foraging area, they will dig safe holes called ‘bolt holes.’ If danger is on the horizon, they will quickly scramble for cover in their bolt holes.

Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are in the category least concern on the IUCN red list.
