Polar bear looking into the water for seals while sitting patiently on an iceberg waiting. Undoubtedly, to capture its favorite food, a Bearded seal. A Polar spends most of its time on sea ice. They are drifting with the iceberg through the Arctic sea. As a great hunter and with a great sense of smell, Polar bears can smell prey from almost a kilometer away.

Polar Bears On Ice

Non-retractable claws keep them from slipping on the ice. Climbing and moving on an iceberg is very easy for them. Not only on the ice, but a Polar bear can also climb a cliff as this one did to sleep under the full moon. Did you know that their hairs are transparent and hollow? The fur looks white because it reflects light on us. Underneath their skin is black to absorb energy from the sun.

Climate change has forced Polar bears to wander on the beach to find food, like a young walrus. Due to declining sea ice and human activity, the Polar bear’s habitat shrinks more and more in the Arctic. That brings them to human contact and inhabitant areas. Polar bears call the Arctic their home. The biggest threat to them is climate change and, of course, us humans.

Polar bear, Ursus maritimus, is listed as threatened on the IUCN list.
