The polar bear resting on pack ice, which looks like an imposing predator, will get lost in the true wonder of this Arctic landscape. It is not easy to spot the animal, as its white fur blends in with the ice so well. The storms brought in an incredible skyline with lots of textures. Perfect for this photograph. The stark white ice pieces contrast so well against the dark Arctic sea and sky.

Svalbard – Polar Bears

The Svalbard island is located halfway between the North Pole and Norway. Here you will find a rare beauty of rugged yet fragile terrain. It is one of Europe’s last vast wildernesses. It is also the domain of more polar bears than people, a territory rich in epic legends of polar exploration.

You will often see a polar bear resting on the ice, as they watch for seals and other animals to hunt. They spend most of their time drifting on these large pieces of ice as it is easier for them to hunt on than on land. In Norway and Denmark, the polar bear is called ‘isbjorn,’ which means ‘ice bear.’ Polar bears generally give birth to twins. It is uncommon for them to birth only one cub or triplets. These cubs will stay with their mother until they are two years old.

Polar bears, Ursus maritimus were, are listed as a threatened speciesΒ on the IUCN list.
