A Polar bear on sea ice is floating towards the sunset. The Arctic ocean is filled with sea ice as far as the eye can see. Colors glow in yellow and orange of the sunset, just above the horizon. Through the clouds shine the sunrays. The polar bear looks over the Arctic sea ice. That animal is an apex predator, which uses the sea ice for hunting their favorite prey, which is seals. Indeed a polar bear spends most of its life on sea ice to find food. If hungry, a polar bear will eat anything it finds. From vegetation, birds, and even human garbage. Would you have guessed that? A polar bear especially needs icebergs as a platform to find its prey.

Polar Bears And Climate Change

Unfortunately, climate change is happening. The Arctic warms up, which results in polar bears losing more and more sea ice that they depend on it. Therefore, the number of polar bears might decline further in the future. Polar bears need to be on the pack-ice to survive. Undoubtedly, climate change brings the top predator to the edge of the Arctic sea.

Less than 2% of polar bear hunts are successful. Spending most of their time on the pack-ice to hunt for food, they are rarely lucky in this department.

Polar bears, Ursus maritimus, are on the list of the IUCN as a threatened species.

The polar bear is indeed a magnificent species. View similar wild animal photographs, like this beautiful bear photo. What will the future hold?

Hi Ruth, indeed it was an amazing experience and adventure to find a polar bear far north between the icebergs in the Arctic. The sunset was a beautiful gift of nature for this photo.

      Ciao Anette
