Sossusvlei, Namibia, Africa

A fine art photograph in B&W shows two unique dead trees on the landscape of the Deadvlei clay pan. You see behind these trees rises an enormous dune. The soft sunrise light beautifully lights the two tree trunks and white clay pan.

On the beautiful white Deadvlei clay pan, stand two unique dead trees completely leafless and dry. Like forgotten by nature and maybe not. Behind the two dead trees rises an enormous dune from the clay pan. That makes the tall trees somewhat seem small. You cannot see the top of the dune in that fine art landscape photograph!

Beautiful Deadvlei, a famous area, which is a clay pan. Its character comes from the uniquely dark, dead thorn trees, which contrast beautifully against the white pan floor and red dunes. This particular pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded, and the enormous amounts of water allowed for the camel thorn trees to thrive.

However, the dunes then intruded on the area and blocked the river from flowing through it. Therefore, there is, by now, a dry clay pan with unique dead tree trunks. The dead trees we estimate to be about 900 years old. Interestingly, they have not decomposed due to the arid climate.

Dead Trees & White Clay Pan

Impressive Deadvlei, the heaven for photographers. That is because of the considerable contrast between the stark black trees, bleached-white pans, rusty-red dunes, and brilliant blue sky. All taken into account make for excellent photographs.

Although you cannot see the colors in this black and white photograph, of course not, you can see the contrast between the light and dark areas. Discover the color photographs of these unique dead trees on a clay pan in our Desert portfolio.
