A beautiful Whooper swan is landing between other swans in a lake. It has its wings fully spread to slow down for landing. You can see underneath the wings, and also, its feet are down for sliding on the water to land. There is just enough space between a flock of whooper swans to land for this bird. The other birds do not mind this whooper swan landing in between the crowd. This species of swans need large open waters to swim in and to feed.

Whooper Swans

A whooper swan has a long thin neck and black legs. On its bill sits a large yellow triangular patch. The size of this species can be about1.5 meters / 5 feet in length. Indeed their wingspan is enormous with about 2.2 meters / 7.2 feet. When a whooper swan lands in between a crowd of swans, all birds happily chat loud. It sounds like welcoming the new bird. Undoubtedly, they are noisy birds.

Some facts about whooper swans:

  • Swans mate for life.
  • They create a musical sound with their wings when they fly.
  • Indeed it represents elegance.
  • They are Finland’s national bird.
  • Their feathers are pure white.

In wintertime at lake Kussharo, they gather together. During winter the Lake Kussharo freezes solid. Only a few spots along the beach will not freeze due to hot springs. The hot springs warm up the sand and, of course, hot water flows into the lake. That remarkable lake is within the Akan Mashu National Park.

Whooper swans, Cygnus cygnus, is of least concern on the IUCN list.
