The zebra resting its head has its eyes almost closed and is in a very sleepy mood. Entirely at ease within the warmth of its friend’s body heat. The striped pattern of their fur stands out in the fine art black and white photograph. It is creating a good contrast and exciting composition.

Zebras Have Friends

Zebras live in groups consisting of a stallion, mares, and offspring. These family groups we call harems. They use many vocalizations to communicate with one another, such as bark, bray, snort, or huff. They also communicate by using facial expressions indeed sending a signal. That behavior they accomplish by either making their eyes wide or baring their teeth and pulling their lips back. To strengthen their bond, another practice, zebras, also do mutual grooming. The zebra resting its head on its friend is a visual example of this strong bond.

When a predator approaches the group, the stallion will make a noise that sounds like a high-pitched snort. The stud will usually wait and watch until his family has left, sometimes even fighting and kicking back. However, the usual tactic is to run. Yet, when he does, he will kick his legs out and deliver a mighty blow. That blow can sometimes extremely injure a predator.
