The enormous tusks of this African elephant bull tell us that he is quite old. That is because tusks never stop growing. Therefore, the older the bull, the longer is the ivory. However, due to elephant poaching for tusks, poachers will find the African elephants with enormous tusks. As a result, the ‘big-tusk-gene’ amongst elephants is becoming increasingly rare.
During adolescence, the bull learns rules that prepare him for adulthood. These include lessons on his social standing within another group of bulls as well as sexual etiquette. Bachelor elephants get together with other bachelors to form groups known as bands. They often split to travel alone or to join another band.
