This cute Meerkat stands on its hind legs and is having a stare-off with me to see whether I am a vicious predator or not. It is standing at only 12 inches tall. These wild animals have a curious nature and often come up to me and stand on my camera or head to investigate!
These sweet Merkats use me for a higher scanning point, their outlook for predators. It is indeed a beautiful experience.
A sad fact about Meerkats is that they are often domesticated. Since Meerkats are great hunters and catch many creepy crawlies. They are lovely creatures that live in large clans with their families. The Meerkat stands on its hind legs to watch and scan for predators to protect its family.
They dig extensive burrows underground to escape predators and sleep safely at night. They have adapted to their lifestyle quite well. Since their survival relies on them burrowing a lot, they have a clear membrane on the surface of their eyes that protects them while dirt is flying as they dig. Additionally, their ears can shut tightly while they dig so no dirt can get in.
Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, are in the category least concern on the IUCN red list. They play a vital role in the ecological harmony of their environment.
